Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her life, but would spend every summer with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma and decided to make the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home for a specific juror. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
